Market Place, Carmona

Thomas Shotter Boys after David Roberts, 1837

Hand-coloured lithograph

During his sojourn in Seville between early May and mid-September 1833, Roberts explored nearby towns, such as Carmona, located thirty-three kilometres north-east of Seville. In this view, he depicts the central market square with the belltower of its main church in the background. His interest in Spanish types and traditional life comes to the fore in his depiction of the sprawling market scene on the left, with figures sitting on the ground, a cart and oxen. A priest wearing a black cloak and a wide brimmed hat, and various women in traditional ‘maja’ clothing are recognizable in the foreground. Generally, the subject is similar to Lewis’s depiction of the Plaza de San Francisco in Seville (see 7.3).
